Maybe It's Just the Rain - Impact Campaign
Reina Bonta’s award-winning short documentary Maybe It’s Just the Rain continues to grow its reach through a dedicated impact campaign, using the film as a tool to spark conversations around identity, pride, and belonging in women and AANHPI communities. In 2025, Reina was selected as an Impact Producing Fellow by A-Doc (Asian American Documentary Network), joining a cohort of filmmakers committed to using storytelling for social change.
Phase 1: U.S. Community Screenings & Activations
Through community screenings in Filipino and broader AANPHI neighborhoods like San Francisco’s SOMA district, the campaign brings the film’s themes to life by centering young girls in the soccer community. These gatherings spark intergenerational conversations on representation, identity, and the urgent need to build stronger support systems for women’s sports.
Phase 3: Published Digital Zine
The campaign culminates with a digital zine that blends global statistics on the rise of women’s sports with intimate anecdotes from AANPHI and football communities worldwide. This living document amplifies personal stories as data, reshaping the narrative landscape around women’s football and making visible the collective force behind change.
Phase 2: Youth Soccer Clinic in Dumaguete, Philippines
In Dumaguete, the campaign will host a professional-style youth clinic that gives underresourced Filipina girls access to elite-level football experiences. By creating a space where young athletes can see themselves as protagonists on the field, this phase challenges deeply rooted patriarchal gender norms and ignites local dreams.
